This is my own book, translated by Ted Kendris. It presents AïkiCom, the approach I built by modelling what Aikido brings to everyday life and to communication. Its starting point: you have to be strong to be kind.

You do not need to practise Aikido to read it. It covers centering and verticality, receiving the energy of an interaction, and turning a conflict into a constructive dialogue.

Éditions de la Bienveillance, 2016, 229 pages, paperback and Kindle. It is the English edition of "Ne cessez pas d'être gentils, soyez forts", first published in French in 2014.

In Search of Martial Kindness, by Christian Vanhenten

Richard Moon carries Aikido into conversation: listening as a way to receive what comes from the other person and to work with it.

He makes his books available to download from his Extraordinary Listening site.

Richard Moon began Aikido in 1971 under Robert Nadeau and founded Aikido of Marin. In this book he presents Aikido as a practice for living, well beyond technique.

It also exists as a DVD under the same title.

Full title: Winning is Healing: Body Awareness and Empowerment for Abuse Survivors.

In this e-book Paul Linden applies his body-awareness work, which grew out of Aikido, to recovery from abuse. It shows how far the principles of the art can be taken outside the dojo.

Full title: Feeling Aikido: Body Awareness Training as a Foundation for Aikido Practice.

This e-book does not teach techniques. It teaches how to pay attention to posture and movement while you perform them, which is also what makes Aikido usable off the mat.

Full title: Embodied Peacemaking: Body Awareness, Self-Regulation and Conflict Resolution.

An e-book of practical exercises. It shows how to notice what the body does under threat, and how to come back to a calm and strong state from which a conflict can be handled.

Published in 2014 by North Atlantic Books. A presentation of somatic coaching: working with a person through posture, breath, movement and sensation as well as through conversation.

For coaches who want to see how a body-based practice like Aikido can inform their work.

Published in 2007 by Frog Books. Strozzi-Heckler treats leadership as something that is trained through the body, the way one trains in a dojo, and not only understood.

A useful book for anyone who brings Aikido to managers and teams.

A collection of essays first published in 1985 by North Atlantic Books. Aikido practitioners describe how they use the art outside the dojo, in their work and in daily life.

It came out forty years ago, and its question is still ours.

Richard Strozzi-Heckler was asked to teach awareness disciplines, from Aikido to meditation, to a group of twenty-five Green Berets as part of a US military experiment. This book is his account of that programme.

It asks a question that concerns all of us: what does the warrior tradition have to offer once it leaves the battlefield and the dojo?
